Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my UZI?
Not a good idea. If the Police find even a spent cartridge you're in trouble. If you feel the need of weaponry, consider a machete, crossbow and/or spear gun.

Where is a safe place to park and rest?
Anywhere. Anyone who thinks Mexico isn’t safe is way wrong. Wave to a local cop; once they see you’re a gringo tourist they will guard you all night.

Any Pemex Station. All of them have space to park for the night; most have convenience stores and restaurants. They are all Federal Property so the "Federales" have jurisdiction and nobody wants to mess with them.

Who are those guys dressed in black carrying automatic weapons?
They look really mean. They could be anything from Army to Local Cops. It’s there job to stand around and look mean. They are there to protect you. Take a minute to say Good Morning/Bueno Dios and watch the smiles erupt.

Should I drink the water?
Of course not. Do you drink the City tap water at home? Try Penafiel. It is possible to develop a tolerance but those of you with only a few short weeks for your vacation don’t need the risk. No milk either, except if it is packaged or dried (It will then be ultra-pasteurized).

Can I buy a piece of Real Estate in Mexico?
Yes………No………Maybe……….Probably
San Blas Real Estate

Can I drink a beer while I am driving?
Yes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with driving and drinking. The problem is in driving, drinking and f______- up! Best though to stay sober ‘till you get the hang of driving in Mexico. Please see Driving in Mexico.

Why are there Army checkpoints?
They are usually only at the State lines and always quite polite as they briefly search for weapons headed south and drugs going north. These soldiers are always a long ways from their homes. Since I know where all the permanent checkpoints are located I try to have something for them; a ball to toss around or a $3 bag of baked goods. No money ever.

What about tipping?
The Mexicano seldom tips in Bars or Restaurants. But, the gringo usually does. Start at 5%; more only if the service is superb. Most everybody tips at the gas station though. A few pesos only, since their wages are so very low. A couple pesos additional if they volunteer to wash your windows and check the oil.

What about the beggars who want money?
Never. Ever. But, if they are selling something like 'chiclets' buy ‘em even if you just give them away later.

Why don’t I just go to Puerto Vallarta?
Why don’t you just go to San Diego?

Why Mexico?
You can easily drive here on good roads. The infrastructure is in place to provide excellent telephone and internet communication access. Quality health care and emergency services are everywhere and expanding rapidly. If necessary you can be anywhere in North America in a few hours. And, the pioneer spirit is alive and well.

Okay, so why Nayarit?
You can drive here in 30 hours from the border. Nayarit is located just south of the Tropic of Cancer with winters that are as Eternal Springtime. So Beautiful. Just a little further North and you can still have winter and to the South as you approach the equator it is just too hot all the time. From Pacific Beaches and the Mangrove Jungle to High Mountain Deserts and Forests. Nayarit has it all! A lifetime of exploration awaits you. Every year for 20 years, I think I should see more of Mexico and the America’s. Then I realize I have only seen a small part of of the state of Nayarit.
