DURANGO TO MAZATLAN ON 40. WOW!

I have driven over the Continental Divide back and forth in British Columbia, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico…………..

I have never seen anything like this.

While your driving try and grasp the fact that this range of mountains known as the Continental Divide runs from Northern Canada to Southern Chile!

You can do the 300K in one day. I often take anywhere from 3 to 5 days. Incredible! Awesome! You will be forced to write and thank me. Carry some extra gas and never pass a Pemex Station without a fill-up. The final 100K is all downhill to sea level at the Southern edge of Mazatlan. You must have good brakes. Restaurants, Hotels, Campgrounds, Grocery Stores and ‘Depositos’ everywhere.

You will smell the Pacific long before you see it.

One of my many overnight spots at KM 45.

Campground at KM 57.

MARYS RESTURANT IN San Juan

Mary’s a darling and the food is always very good. Great place……… KM 137

TOP OF THE WORLD

Yeah, they say Mt. Everest is, but ya can’t drive there! A must stop. Great simple food. Unbelievable view……………KM 168

INCREDIBLE OVERNITE PARK
My very favorite. And, in the dozens of nights I have spent here there has never been another camper.……..KM 209. Here or the German Hotel leaves you with an easy days drive to Tepic.

TROPIC OF CANCER
I simply can’t pass this spot without at least a quick stop. KM 219

GERMAN RESTURANT AND HOTEL
On my way North I often stop for a meal. After 6 months in the Mexican Jungles and Deserts; sitting under the Ponderosas eating potato pancakes gives me quite a kick. Right turn just past a giant Tecate sign at KM 233.

MAZATLAN
Coming down out of the Sierra Madre Occidentals, unless you wish to visit Mazatlan turn South on Highway 15. There is a ‘quota’. I prefer the ‘libre’. Follow the signs to Tepic.
