SAN BLAS, NAYARIT

You can’t hardly miss the signs………

Yo! The history of this place is fascinating.
The first Spanish Pacific Port that became the shortcut to the Orient that Columbus was originally seeking. A history professor from the University of Nayarit told me that there were Chinese Junks in the Harbor unloading the Silks and Spices from the Orient on their way to Europe. She said also that the trade was so heavy that as one train of a hundred mules were loaded and departed. Another and another were loaded and left so rapidly that the train in front and that behind would never be out of sight for the months long journey over the Sierra Madres to the Gulf of Mexico Ports. Fascinating.

San Blas and the Bay at Matachen was the embarkation point for Fray Junipero Serras exploration of the North American Pacific Coast that eventually resulted in the founding of San Diego, San Francisco and more.

Since Hurricane Kenna did a wipe-out on San Blas, the Historic “fort” on the hill has been rebuilt as has the Customs House. I am very proud of the people who accomplished this massive undertaking.

The Former German Embassy Building is now the Flamingo Hotel, the best Hotel in San Blas. You should ask to see this place even if you don’t stay. A unique example of what can be accomplished when the owner/builder states, “We are going to do this right, regardless of the cost.” Hotel Flamingos

There is now another spectacular Hotel (Bed & Breakfast) in San Blas; La Casa de las Cocadas

I think of San Blas as the Shanghi of North America. And I would bet it really was. Kinda still is. Strange, Unique Place, “………..and something more than a name………..”
